NC3R: International 3Rs prize

Each year the NC3Rs awards a prize to highlight an outstanding original contribution to scientific and technological advances in the 3Rs, published in the last three years. The award consists of a £28k prize grant and £2k personal award. Highly-commended entries receive a £4k grant and a £1k personal award.

The Society of Toxicology (SOT) is accepting applications through Monday, October 9, for the following grant opportunities.

Disease Models: Epilepsy on the Chip

A team of researchers from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, are developing an organ-on-a-chip model to be able to create two different forms of epilepsy. To realise they will receive $ 2.0 million of funding for the following two years from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).

JRC: Trainee on non-animal methods in GHS

The traineeship involves activities, under supervision of the Traineeship adviser, at the Chemical Safety and Alternative methods Unit and the EU Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) related to the introduction of criteria on how to use non-animal methods for classification of health hazards in the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

The traineeship will involve support to desk-based research which will result in an elaborate text proposal to be discussed at EU level as well as within the UN Subcommittee working group on non-animal methods for future inclusion into the GHS.

Inducative duration: 5 months.

The European Commission has published early details on funding opportunities for the next three years under its Future and Emerging Technologies research stream. The next €1B flagship projects will target ICT, energy and health, according to the draft work programme for 2018-2020 published by the Commission.

EU-Life, an alliance of 13 leading European life science research institutes, has set out its key priorities for the next Framework Programme, calling on the Commission to double funding to €150 billion, compared to the current Horizon 2020 programme.

Multidisciplinary research at the Wyss Institute has led to the development of a multi-material 3D bioprinting method that generates vascularized tissues composed of living human cells that are nearly ten-fold thicker than previously engineered tissues and that can sustain their architecture and function for upwards of six weeks.
