Switzerland: Increase of animal experiments Featured

Last year in Switzerland 761,675 animals were used in experiments. This is an increase of 8 per cent in compare to 2009. For the first time in four years, animal experiments were realised once again for the cosmetic industry.

According to a statement of the Federal veterinary office (BVET) the increase was caused by additional experiments due to poultry production, amongst a great study on density in farming of chicken in the Canton of Lucerne. Three quater of all used animals were mice, rats, hamsters and guinea pigs. The number of highly taxing animal experiments has decreased which are combined with a lot of pain and long-term suffering (minus 14 per cent).

In the cosmetic industry, four rodents were used in an experiment for preparations intended for sun protection.
