U.S. tobacco giant stops animal testing Featured

The third largest U.S. cigarette manufacturer Lorillard intends stop testing on animals. For years the company had forced rats to inhale cigarette smoke.

The tobacco giant Lorillard has implemented a new company policy into force that ends animal experiments, according to a report by the animal welfare organization Peta.

The only exception allowed for by the policy is tests expressly required by law. The cigarette manufacturer has published the policy on its website. Lorillard had previously been in contact with animal rights activists over a long period of time. Lorillard sells cigarettes under the brand names Newport, True Maverick, Old Gold and Kent.

In Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Estonia and Slovakia such animal experiments with tobacco products are banned. In the U.S. the fourth largest tobacco producer in the world, Imperial Tobacco (Gauloises, West, Davidoff) already gave up animal testing several years ago.

However, not all companies from the tobacco business have done likewise: The two largest American cigarette manufacturers, R. J. Reynolds and Philip Morris, continue conducting animal experiments.
