This year's Ursula M. Händel Animal Welfare Research Award of the German Research Foundation (DFG) goes to Professor Ellen Fritsche and Dr Hamid Reza Noori. The prize is endowed with 50,000 euros.

Advanced algorithms working from large chemical databases can predict a new chemical's toxicity better than standard animal tests, suggests a study led by scientists at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

An international team of researchers led by Dr. Caghan Kizil from the DZNE Dresden has developed a novel in vitro model. The model can be used to investigate repair mechanisms in Alzheimer's-damaged nerve cells by an immune response.

JCR and EFSA renew their cooperation

The Joint Research Center (JCR) of the European Union and the European Food and Safety Agency (EFSA) have renewed their cooperation agreement. Among other things, both authorities want to focus on the exchange and joint activities in the field of alternative methods to protect animals.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published its Strategic Plan to Promote the Development and Implementation of Alternative Test Methods Within the TSCA Program.

The European Commission has recently launched open calls for tender inviting experts to develop eLearning tools to facilitate uptake of non-animal alternative approaches in science.

Until 30 June, the Joint Research Center of the European Union is conducting a survey as part of a study on 3R-relevant training and education opportunities. Until then, all scientists and developers are called upon to name and describe their course offerings, procedures and developments in the survey.

On November 20, the this year´s Annual Conference of the European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) will be held in Brüssels. The conference has the interesting title "Pooling Resources to promote the use of alternative methods for advancing safety assessment".

In a press release published today, Professor Ulrich Dirnagl and Professor Daniel Strech from the Berlin Institute for Health Research (BIH) and from the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, together with their team of authors, appealed to scientists to accept a greater degree of responsibility and engage for an improved quality in preclinical research.

Applicants can only be nominated for the LUSH Award 2018 until July 4. The prize of 350,000 British Pound honours researchers and committed individuals in the five categories Science, Young Scientists and Training, Public relations and lobbying.
