Corbeil-Essonnes: I-STEM scientist wins the 2023 Alfred Katler Biology Prize Featured

At the end of January, French in vitro neuroscientist Dr. Alexandra Benchoua was honored for her development of an animal-free method that can be used to investigate neurological and psychiatric diseases such as autistic spectrum disorders and to find treatment options.

The winner is Research Director at the Institute for Stem Cell Therapy and Research on Monogenic Diseases (I-STEM) in Corbeil-Essonnes, located 30 km south of Paris, France. Her research method is based on human stem cells derived directly from patients. The research group works in particular on genetic forms of autism spectrum disorders (SHANK mutations), Lesch-Nyhan disease (HGPRT) and neurological damage in certain forms of myopathy (Dochenne and Becker myopathy, mutations in the DMD gene).
