Cell line catalogue of the European cell bank EBiSC Featured

EBiSC is the first European bank for human induced pluripotent stem cells, gained from healthy volunteers as well as from patients suffering from various hereditary diseases. The cell bank offers 795 human cell lines, another 240 will be available shortly.

EBiSC is a platform for induced pluripotent stem cells. For this purpose, tissue samples from the skin of probands and patients will be reembryonized with the help of - for ionstance - a transposon. 26 European research institutions have joined forces to EBiSC. The aim is the central storage and distribution of relevant, high-quality human-induced pluripotent stem cells for researchers from academia and industry. They are able to do investigate diseases in vitro and development better and safer medicine. The cell lines offered here are subject to the necessary internationally accepted quality control.

The non-profit project is funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) and members of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA). IMI funding alone amounts to more than 21 million euros.

EBiSC is headquartered at Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge. From here, cell propagation, quality control and characterization are carried out. Distribution is coordinated by the European Cell Culture Collection (ECACC) of the Department of Health, UK. The Fraunhofer Institute IBMT in Saarbrücken is also involved.
