Despite replacement procedures: still animal testing in the EU Featured

A new study of the Animal Welfare Academy in Neubiberg near Munich, which was funded by the Foundation for the Promotion of Alternative and Complementary Methods to Reduce Animal Testing (set), has found that in the context of the European chemicals directive REACH still avoidable animal experiments are carried out despite existing replacement process.

The corresponding regulations at EU level are not uniform and would be updated too slow. A review of all relevant EU testing regulations by the Animal Protection Academy as well as an alignment with internationally recognized alternative methods showed, that many alternative methods to animal experiments are not mentioned at all or only in a few rules. Instead, animal tests are furthermore required. Often lack even a basic indication of possible alternatives.

The study results were published in the scientific journal ALTEX 29 3/12.

Dr. Christiane Buta, CEO of the set Foundation, recommends the "establishment of a central body which is able to update and standardize the EU legislation," the recent press release said.

The Foundation for the Promotion of Alternative and Complementary Methods to Reduce Animal Testing (SET Foundation) unites representatives of different associations. Connected with set are the Animal Welfare Association eV, German Animal Welfare Association, Agricultural Industry Association eV, Industry Association for Personal Care and Detergents, Association of the Chemical Industry and the Association of Research-based Pharmaceutical Companies. Common goal is improving, reduction and avoiding animal testing.
