iPC stem cell ressource to study psychiatric disorders Featured

The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) and the Stanley Center at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard are partnering to create a foundational stem cell resource to study psychiatric disorders through the production of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines from individuals with schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders.

The Stanley Center has recently reported on the genotyping of more than 10,000 patients with schizophrenia. Researchers can generate induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) from skin samples taken from patients suffering from schizophrenia. From the iPS cells they are able to develope brain cells that are affected in schizophrenia. With the adult nerve cell cultures they can conduct basic research as well as identify drugs as new treatments for psychiatric diseases.
