NIH to invest increased in NAMs Featured

Last week, the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, accepted the Advisory Committee's to consider approaches that use new alternative methods in biomedical and behavioral research.


The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the world's largest sponsor of biomedical research, will prioritize investments in so-called "novel alternative methods" (NAMs) in research that do not require animal testing. "These complementary, non-animal-based approaches are very promising," says NIH Director Dr. Monica Bertagnolli on Thursday at X (1, 2).

With an annual budget of around 47 billion dollars and 20,000 employees, the NIH, which is not only active in the United States, is the largest research funding organization in the world (3).

The renowned oncologist Dr. Monica Bertagnolli was nominated by President Biden in May 2023 and confirmed in the US Senate in November (4).
