Provivo Biosciences (formerly LPT), a service provider, plans to minimize animal testing at all of its sites by January of next year and work predominantly in vitro.

On July 1, the Einstein Center 3R was launched in Berlin. Its goal is to contribute to reduce or replace animal testing in certain areas of biomedical research with in vitro methods. It will initially be funded with around 5.3 million euros from the Einstein Foundation until the end of 2026. We spoke with the EC3R's head of communications and public relations, Prof. Dr. Jens Kurreck, about the center's tasks and goals.

The Next Generation Humane Science Award of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) is available annually to young scientists to acknowledge and encouraging researchers who focus on replacing the use of animals in experiments. The 2021 award will be a prize of up to $5,000 to recognize the work of one young scientist.

For the first time, the University Medical Center Mainz awarded a science prize for young scientists for the development of a culture medium for specific human cells on September 1, 2021.  The prize is endowed with 2,500 euros.

Pancreatic cancer undone in human cells

Wednesday, 06 October 2021 08:59

A team of researchers at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, engineered an acinar-on-chip (PAC) from reprogrammed pancreatic cancer cells and induced PTF1a gene expression in the cells. They observed that the cells transitioned to a more normal and differentiated acinar phenotype. The model can be used to study the development and progression of pancreatic cancer.

Jena: Research to combat infectious diseases

Thursday, 23 September 2021 09:00

As part of the EU project Inno4Vac (Innovations to accelerate vaccine development and manufacture), the "Inspire" working group from Jena University Hospital will develop immunocompetent organ models. InVitro+Jobs spoke with the head of the Inspire working group at Jena University Hospital, private lecturer Dr. Alexander Mosig.

With the help of its own Innovation Task Force (ITF), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) aims to help developers to replace, reduce and refine animal testing during the development, manufacture and testing of human and veterinary medicines.

ECEAE Prize for animal-free antibodies

Wednesday, 22 September 2021 12:19

To raise awareness about the advantages of animal-free produced antibodies and promote their development and application, the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) is announcing for the first time a Prize for animal-free antibodies. The aim of this prize is to highlight the versatility and superiority of animal-free antibodies and encourage their acceptance and use for research and therapeutic purposes.

To find out more precisely how the SARS-CoV-2 virus manages to evade immune defenses and replicate in the cells of patients, an international research team involving the Technical University of Munich broke new ground with artificial intelligence. They succeeded in compiling the most comprehensive and detailed overview to date of all the 3D structures of the virus proteins available worldwide. In a database, this information is publicly available for research.
