During the annual meeting in Halle (Saale) the senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG) has decided to support a funding initiative to promote sequencing projects - and the associated expansion of the infrastructure at universities.

A researcher team from the Martin Luther University Halle examine an intrinsically disordered protein in the human body. Intrinsically disordered proteins are such do not have a solid structure. They are located at switching sites of the cells' signal processing and can be misused by tumor cells to metastasize.

The biologist Dr. Maria Moreno-Villanueva from the Department of Molecular Toxicology at Konstanz University receives a grant from NASA's Johnson Space Center in the amount of 10,000 US dollars to improve an automated diagnostic device for DNA damage for space research.

The pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has developed a screening platform in which heart micro tissues have been combined with high-throughput imaging. Thus it is possible to better detect potential cardiotoxic indications during drug development.

To investigate adverse immune responses to dental and laryngeal implants, an international research consortium, co-ordinated by the Steinbeis 2i GmbH has developed a foreign body response on-a-chip platform. Such kind of diagnostic test can predict individual immune responses of individual patients.

Today, InVitroJobs has welcomed a new work group on its platform: the research team for micro- and biosystem engineering at Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS in Dresden. The scientists develop and optimize microphysiological systems to mimic the organ physiology of the human body in multi-organ chips to replace animal experiments. The research database of the InVitro+Jobs portal has reached nearly 280
groups.

Dr. Julia Stubenbord is the new representative of the federal agency for animal protection in Baden-Württemberg. In an interview with"tierversuche verstehen", she reports that there are thoughts for an establishment of a Center for Collaborative Approach to Meta-Analysis and Review of Animal Data from Experimental Studies (CAMARADES) in analogy to the German Cochrane Center at one of the Baden-Würtemberg's universities. Such kind of Center already exists in the UK. The aim of the Center is to investigate the transferability of animal experiments to humans, which would be a contribution towards the validity of animal experiments and the implementation of 3R.
