In August 2017 the 10th World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, probably this year’s most significant international scientific event in the field, took place in Seattle.

Malaria research with placenta on the chip

Sunday, 03 September 2017 08:35

With the help of a microfluidic chip, researchers from the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the Florida Atlantic University are developing a 3d model that will be used to simulate placental diseases, such as the complicated sequence of a malaria-infected placenta.

Call for Expressions of Interest for Membership of the Scientific Panels and the Scientific Committee of EFSA 2017

Researchers, led by Prof. Dr. Peter Neubauer from the Department of Bioprocess Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin are working on the "Lab of the Future". With their fully automated solution, they want to drastically reduce the time from development to the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

On the basis of a specially developed lung inflammation model with human lung tissue, scientists from the University Hospital Charité Berlin, Department infectology and pneumology headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Hocke succeeded in positively influence an immune reaction on a double infection - a severe influenza virus infection and concomitant pneumococcal infection.

The finance ministers of the EU member states are demanding to reduce the EU budget for investment in research and innovation next year by 491.47 million euros. This decision would be most unfortunate, since two-thirds of EU prosperity has been achieved by research and development in the EU over the past 20 years. This should not be ignored during discussions about competitiveness of the region.

Using a cell culture with human tonsils and computer simulations, a European research team has deciphered a mechanism  which provide that dopamine, known as a neurotransmitter, influences the rate of signal cascade in B cells as well as the amout of available antibodies via a signal pathway in the germinal centers of the lymph nodes. The connection between dopamine and immune system does not exist in mice.

In vitro projects successfully completed

Two projects funded by Animal Free Research UK have been successfully completed. One is an in vitro model developed at the Queen Mary University of London, the other models with patient-specific neurinoma cells resp. meningioma tissue, constructed at Plymouth University.

A spanish scientist team plans to to print out patient's own bones and cartilages in three-dimensional form. With this tissues it should be possible to replace prostheses made of metal in future.

Today many diseases are treated with biopharmaceuticals, which are antibodies or other proteins. However, the mass production of these bio-drugs is often still done in mammalian cells. Using ciliates, a company has found a replacement for animal cells.
