Research groups can apply for the animal welfare research award again until 30 September. The prize is endowed with 20,000 euros.

The European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) supports students with outstanding work in alternative approaches by funding their attendance at a high-profile scientific event.

The Charité - University Medicine Berlin and the Technical University Berlin will do research together on human model systems in the future. The start is in 2023. The general public was informed about their plans on 24 May at Rotes Rathaus in Berlin.

Sabatini in Cambridge have observed a cell nuclear protein migrating into the cytoplasm when nutrient deficiency occurs, where it degrades ribosomes. This makes a survival of the cell possible.

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease. The increasing aggregation of beta-amyloids let nerve cells die in the brain. A British research team led by Prof. Michele Vendruscolo from the Department of Chemistry  of the University of Cambridge now found that cholesterol in the cells plays an important role in this aggregation process.

The American start-up company Hesperos Inc. from Florida has developed a neuromuscular in vitro model which can be used to investigate pharmaceuticals to treat neuromuscular diseases  as well as to test nerve toxins such as botulinum toxin.

It consists of polymer matrices containing defined chemical components that offers a cells growth in a more nature-like environment.

The European Commission intends to allocate euros 97.6 billion to the Horizon Europe research programme over the next seven years. This is about 30 percent more than for the current Horizon 2020, but less than lobby organizations had expected.
