Berlin Research Award 2021 "Alternatives to Animal Testing" announced Featured

Once again, the Senate Department for Justice, Consumer Protection and Anti-Discrimination, the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo) as well as the Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (vfa) are offering the "Alternatives to Animal Testing" research prize of the State of Berlin to promote the development of replacement and supplementary methods.


The prize is awarded every two years. Accordingly, the aim is to replace animal testing, to avoid it as far as possible, as well as to reduce the stress on animals.
 
Applications for the research award are open to research institutes, companies or scientifically active individuals based in Berlin and Brandenburg with planned or ongoing research projects or projects that pursue the development/validation of methods by which can
 
- replaces animal experiments ("replacement"),
- reduces the number of animals used in experiments ("Reduction") and/or
- reduces the suffering and pain of laboratory animals ("Refinement").
                            
This also includes projects that take up existing approaches and develop them further so that they can be widely used in practice (prevalidation or validation). In addition, research projects that have already been completed and have achieved at least one of the three objectives mentioned above may be submitted.
 
Applications can be submitted to the State Office for Health and Social Affairs until August 31, 2021.

The prize money amounts to 30,000 euros.
