Leipzig: New carrier systems for 3D cell culture Featured

A research alliance consisting of Leipzig University Medicine,  and KET GmbH has developed a new, silicone-based 3D cell culture structure to create optimal conditions for cell growth outside the organism.


3D carrier systems provide optimal environmental conditions for the cultivation and expansion of adherent cells up to the targeted differentiation of stem cells and its functionality. The team, led by the workgroup of Applied Molecular Hepatology at Leipzig University Hospital together with the KET GmbH has developed such a carrier system based on silicone.

Human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC), isolated from human fat tissue, were differentiated on the 3D structures in such a way that they acted like organic cells in the body.
The cells colonized the 3D structure and formed three-dimensional cell structures. Liver cells gained from MSC were able to significantly improve their functions on the 3D silicone structure compared to the cells differentiated in a 2D culture.
