BOARDS: Organoids-on-a-Space Featured

Developmental Biology in Space: Scientists from the University of California San Diego led by Alysson R. Muotri, Professor at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, are going to send human brain organoids to the International Space Station ISS. On 21 July it will be start.

More than 100 human brain organoids, derived from stem cells, are send in a so-called CubeLab to the International Space Station (ISS) to study how the zero-gravity affects the early development of the human brain. The cell structures will stay there for four weeks telemonitored from Earth. Afterwards the organoids will return to earth and with them lots of data about gene expression, epigenetics, morphology and metabolomics which has to be compared with those from controls on Earth.

The mission is called BOARDS (Brain Organoid Advanced Research Developed in Space). The study results will have a significant impact on a possible space colonization and the human health.
