ImmuTherM: New research project against skin cancer Featured

A researcher team of from Würzburg hopes to break new ground in the fight against black skin cancer (malignant melanoma). The team is focusing on immunotherapies that are being developed using human skin disease models.

The ImmuTherM research project aims to find new ways to determine the efficacy of immune therapies against malignant melanoma. The project is supported by three Würzburg researchers and their teams: Prof. Dr. Bastian Schilling from the University Dermatology Clinic (UKW), Dr. Niklas Beyersdorf from the Department of Immunology at the Julius Maximilian University (JMU) and Dr. Florian Groeber-Becker from the Fraunhofer Translational Centre for Regenerative Therapies at the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC.

For their investigations, a malignant melanoma model system already developed by the Fraunhofer Translation Centre and UKW will be expanded by further tumour cell lines and human T cells.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the joint project with a total of around 830,000 euros over the next three years as part of the "Alternatives to Animal Experimentation" funding programme.
