Europe: Infringement proceedings against Germany Featured

The European Commission has launched infringement proceedings against Germany for open questions concerning the implementation of the EU Animal Experiments Directive 63/2010/EU.

As a reminder: In a report commissioned by the Bündnis 90/The Green Party, an incorrect implementation of the European Animal Experiments Directive into German law was found in 18 points. The most important are:

1 According to the EU directive, extremely severe animal experiments (i.e. those involving prolonged severe pain, suffering or distress) should only be authorized in exceptional cases. This restriction has not been implemented by Germany.

2 Part of the controls on animal experiments should take place unannounced. This requirement has not been implemented at all.

3 Animal experiments in education and training must be subject to authorization in accordance with the directive. Instead, according to German law, they only have to be announced, so that universities carry out animal experiments for which there are already animal-free methods as an alternative.
