It could be more: Increase in global demand for in vitro toxicity testing to $8.8 billion by 2023 Featured

According to a report, the company Kalorama Information has calculated that the global market for in vitro toxicity testing will increase to $ 8,88 bn. in the next 5 years. This year it will be $ 6.83 billion.

The demand in Europe accounts for 41 % of the market in the field of in vitro toxicity tests. Reasons are - amongst others - ethical concerns about animal testing and the commitment of regulators to promote alternative testing methods. The annual growth rate there will increase by 6.4% to $3.57 billion by 2023.

However, due to the technical challenges in the development of in vitro technologies, the growth is expected to be a assessed cautiously. Market growth is also expected to be affected by the hesitancy of regulatory authorities to implement in vitro tests in their regulations for reasons of consumer protection. Additionally, many of the in vitro test methods are considered non-unambiguous, because they  "currently lacks convincing evidence of their efficacy in accurately predicting toxicity in vivo".

Critics of this estimate have long criticised the attempt to compare apples with pears. The new - mostly human-specific - methods inevitably lead to new endpoints, and the development of concepts - keyword AOP etc. - are already under way. In addition, animal test results are often not readily tranducible on the human situation.

And that's what toxicity testing is mostly about: the safety for Humans.
