Bielefeld: Xell AG develops defined chemical media for cell culture Featured

Xell AG has developed a medium without animal components, specifically designed for first steps in the development of cell lines. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has supported the project from 2012 to 2015 with with nearly euros 370,000 from the funding initiative "KMU-innovativ: Biotechnologie" ("SME innovative: biotechnology").

Xell AG is currently working on the finalization of the formulation. Additionally, the company has already taken first steps towards to marketing of the products. In a second project also funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), cell culture media are being optimized for various applications. In this case, non-soluble or hardly soluble components as well as components which are difficult to formulate have to be introduced in the cells via the nutrient solution. For the purpose the ingredients are encapsulated in nanoparticles consisting of polymers to be taken up by cells via the nutrient solution in order to reach the release. For this research Xell AG cooperates with the University of Jena.

The BMBF is contributing 263,000 euros to the funding initiative for this project.
