Pain Research: Diabetic neuropathy in vitro Featured

The new research consortium "NeuRoWeg" wants to establish a stem cell-derived cell system for basic research on pain and industrial drug discovery. As an example a model should be used to investigate diabetic neuropathy.

The research consortium consists of four research groups: the Institute for Reconstructive Neurobiology at Bonn University, the translation company LIFE & BRAIN GmbH, the pharmaceutical company Grünenthal and the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, University Hospital of Cologne.

Using the example of diabetes-induced neuropathy pain, a chronic pain model from induced pluripotent stem cells will be developed which will be used to test potential drugs. The researchers will produce induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) from patients´ own skin or blood samples. Then from these iPS cells pain neurons (nociceptive neurons) are generated. The new stem cell technology is a blessing, because nociceptive neurons cannot be cultivated in another way and also not harvested in sufficient quantities from donors.
