Wound healing with 3D skin models Featured

With a chair in translational wound research at Witten University Herdecke (UW/H), the surgeon Prof. Dr. Ewa Klara Stürmer wants to investigate new treatment options for poorly healing wounds using three-dimensional skin models.

The researcher wants to find new explanations, how chronic, poorly healing wounds can heal, particularly in elderly people and such patients suffering from multifactorial diseases which become more common.

for wound healing patient's own stem cells are activated, which are then designed to stimulate the skin for a better healing. Another way involves phytomedicine: a cure of various skin cells should be initiated by various plant extracts. The scientist is convinced that the use of human 3D skin model comes a bit closer to the real situation of the skin because healing of animal skin like those from mouse or pig is different to those in humans.

The scientist will also investigate the interactions between drugs and wounds.
