Applications for the German Thesis Award 2012 now possible

Each year the Körber Foundation presents the German Thesis Award for the year’s most important dissertations. Applications can be submitted until 1 March 2012.

The German Thesis Award annually honours the best young German scientists from all disciplines. The patron is the President of the Bundestag (Germany’s federal parliament), Norbert Lammert. The Körber Foundation honours substantial and innovative scientific contributions with prize money totalling more than € 100,000, including three top prizes worth € 30,000 each. This makes the German Thesis Award one of the best remunerated academic awards for junior researchers in Germany. The call for applications is addressed to graduates in all scientific disciplines who have completed their doctorates summa com laude or magna cum laude.

In addition to scientific excellence, the German Thesis Award honors the respective research work’s particular relevance to society, the focus being less on economic returns than on the benefits to society as a whole.

The German Thesis Award encourages young researchers to place an emphasis on the social value of their own research work and to face public debate. For this reason the applicants must also demonstrate communicative skills. Candidates who are shortlisted take part in a selection conference; in a presentation followed by a short debate they must convince the jury of the scientific and social significance of their research work.

The German Thesis Award stages its own events and issues its own publications, presenting the award winners with further opportunities to make the wider public beyond their scientific circles aware of their research findings. In this sense the German Thesis Award regards itself as a platform for young research.
