Sigmaringen University receives Funding for In vitro Research Featured

The Albstadt-Sigmaringen University can be proud of: be: They are be funded with 300,000 euros by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research for their project, "MitoFunk: Biology of aging processes".

The research group led by Prof. Jörg Bergemann examines the link between cell's own repair processes and mitochondrial function in human cell cultures. Due to aging and didease the mitochondrial function may be restricted. The researchers suggest a close interaction between the functioning of the mitochondria and the cell's own repair mechanisms.

Aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of aging and disease and to derive opportunities for prevention. The researchers want to develop new test methods and find out which drugs can increase the cells´ repair capacity or compensate for the loss of function of the mitochondria. Certain examinations are now possible with a new device called the "Seahorse", which was purchased as part of the project.
