Würzburg researchers at the Fraunhofer Translational Center for Regenerative Medicine therapies (TLZ-RT) together with the virologist Professor Jochen Bodem from the Julius Maximilians University (JMU) Würzburg investigate active ingredients against the SARS-CoV-2. For this purpose, they use special tissue models.

Many questions come up in this situation: What is behind Covid-19? How can we fight it? Baltimore: CAAT supports Covid 19 research

In response to the corona crisis, the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) has rededicated part of its in vitro toxicology funding program from Alan and Helene Goldberg to support the discovery of mechanisms, drugs or vaccines against Covid-19 and coronavirus to finance the project.

A German team of researchers has been investigating the mechanisms of the coronavirus. It has found a cellular protein that might be a potential target for the development of a treatment against the virus invasion into the lung cells.

New ECVAM Status Report 2019 released

The European validation authority for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM) has published its status report on the development, validation and legal acceptance of alternative methods for scientific purposes.

On the basis of his latest genetic studies, the Leipzig brain researcher Prof. Thomas Arendt, Head of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of the Neurodegeneration at the Paul Flechsig Institute for Brain Research has shown that Alzheimer's disease mainly affects brain regions that have developed late in human evolution. Nevertheless, Alzheimer's research is carried out on animals and has so far not led to any medical treatment of humans.

Researchers at the UZH Space Hub of the University of Zurich, led by Prof. Oliver Ullrich and Dr. Cora Thiel are presently cultivating human tissue from adult stem cells on the ISS space station. The researchers are using the weightlessness to produce better transplants as well as tissues, that could avoid animal testing.

The young company Nandatec from Lübeck is conducting tests on contact lenses without the use of rabbits. Therefore, human eye tissue is first printed on the 3D printer and then equipped with the contact lens.
