PEI: Workshop on Alternatives to Animal Experiments Featured

25 experts accepted the invitation of the Paul-Ehrlich Institute (PEI) in Langen, Germany, and convened on the 9th and 10th of June for a workshop on alternatives to the use of animals for testing whooping cough vaccines.

The primary focus was on the development of alternative detection methods for the so-called pertussis toxin produced by the whooping cough pathogen, the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Up until now, the so-called mouse histamine test has been used to assess whether vaccines produced contain only the desired inactive form of the toxin. The workshop’s main goal was to create such conditions as would be necessary for replacing this method with an animal-free test, and to establish a method suitable for inclusion in the European Pharmacopoeia.
