Autism is one of the most commonly diagnosed developmental disorders in children, with a rising tendency. Both genetic and environmental factors should play a role. Over 1000 genes are said to be affected. The clinical picture is characterized by changes in immune reactions and inflammatory processes.
Scientists have proposed to develop autism disease models from patients' own adult cells to develop a new approach of patient care. The nerve cells in the models would carry the autism genotype of the patient. Goal would be the identification of more precise and patient-specific therapeutic treatment options.
