Thomas Hartung is honoured with Björn Ekwall Memorial Award 2017 Featured

Professor Thomas Hartung from the Johns Hopkins University, the United States of America, is the recipient of the Björn Ekwall Memorial Award for the year 2017 in recognition of his scientific achievements in the development and evaluation of methods for risk assessment of toxic chemicals, without the use of experimental animals, and for his work as the Director of ECVAM (2002-2008) and the Director of CAAT (from 2009 until present).

Dr. Björn Ekwall was a pioneer in the field of in vitro toxicology. In the early 1970s, he performed extensive studies, which indicated that cell cultures could be used to evaluate the toxic effects of chemicals.

The main goals of the BEMF is to honour the memory of Dr. Björn Ekwall by giving a reward to the scientists who have substantially contributed to the field of cell toxicology, e.g. by developing new in vitro tests, or via mechanistic or validation studies.
