Green Party demand for database to avoid animal test duplications Featured

Lower Saxony's Agriculture Minister Christian Meyer wants decrease the number of animal experiments by means of an European database.

All tests should be published in this database. This transparency should avoid test duplications. For an introduction of an European database the Animal Welfare Act must be changed at the federal level, said the Minister in a dpa interview.

Unlike an existing database for animal experiments the Greens politician considers the idea of a database with study results.

In Germany there exists a database called 'animaltestinfo' at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. There, all officially approved animal experiments are documented in form of non-technical project summaries. Up to 12 months are between the official approval and publication of the non-technical project summaries at maximum. However, the general public learns nothing about the results. A retrospective review is only intended for experiments with primates or those of the category "severe pain, suffering or injury" and also not publicly.
