VITO founds Consortium for eye irritation testing strategies Featured

Last year, the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) has launched a research initiative with the goal to initiate a new research collaboration to practically implement the in vitro eye irritation tests. Since safety assessments of chemicals will be based merely on in vitro data over the coming years, there is an urgent need to develop reliable in vitro testing strategies.

The Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) has already adopted the matter by establishing a consortium under the name CON4EI (Consortium for in vitro Eye Irritation Testing Strategy). Industry representatives such as L'Oréal Research & Innovation, MatTek In Vitro Life Science Laboratories, the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ghent University or Cyprotex US are representatives of the consortium.

Together the founders have already submitted a proposal a Cefic, in which they introduce their ideas for a tiered testing strategy for the safety assessment of eye irritation potential of chemicals.

The project will be presented at the upcoming EUROTOX in Portugal and on the EUSAAT Congress in Linz in September.
