New Biomarkers for Prediction of Diabetes Featured

A German research team has analyzed 4,000 blood samples, which derived from different research projects. In so-called metabolome analysis they identified 14 novel biomarkers for type 2 diabetes.

The 14 markers not only provide new insights into the development of the widespread disease type-2 diabetes. According to the opinion of the German Diabetes Association (DDG) they also could   improve the prognosis of the disease. The technical term „metabolome“  means the sum of all metabolic products, so-called metabolites, which are formed in the body at a given time. In diabetes, especially the metabolism of sugars, fats and amino acids play an important role. Therefore, the metabolomic study is concentrated on 163 metabolites from this area. Doing so, the metabolome of healthy people were compared whith those who developed diabetes during the study. The researchers found differences in 14 metabolites.

Currently, the study results have been published in the journal "Diabetes". They provide important suggestions for further research.
