COMBACTE: Insights From Study Samples Featured

Clinical studies for testing new medical drugs produce considerable amounts of patient samples that would be extremely valuable for researching diseases, but which have been rarely used so far. In a new research project that is a common initiative of the European Union and the pharmaceutical industry for combating resistant bacteria, scientists now want to make use of this resource.

COMBACTE (Combating Bacterial Resistance in Europe) is a project initiated by scientists from the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig and the TWINCORE Institute for Experimental Infection Research in Hannover. Also involved are the Hannover Medical School, the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, the Faculté de Médecine Necker in Paris and the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline in Philadelphia. The scientists want to use the patient samples from GlaxoSmithKline’s first study phase. The company recently developed a promising drug that attacks the enzyme peptide deformylase, which only occurs in bacteria, for combating the dangerous pathogen MRSA.

The scientists now want to search for biomarkers, molecules that are characteristic to the infection and can deliver information as to whether the diagnosis is correct or the therapy is effective.
