Berlin-Brandenburg: 3R Research platform opens Featured

The Berlin-Brandenburg research platform BB3R with integrated graduate education will be officially opened on Friday 4 July.

The research platform is a joint project of Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, the University of Potsdam, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment and the Zuse Institute Berlin.

The goals of BB3R are to pool 3R-related expertise (3R: Reduction, Refinement, Replacement of animal experiments) within the region Berlin-Brandenburg, promote systematic research in this area and train and qualify outstanding young scientists in alternative methods and animal-friendly techniques at a high level. The ultimate goal is to establish alternative and animal-friendly methods for preclinical drug development and basic research. Cooperation between working groups on the region is to be promoted and it is intended that research groups led by junior professors be set up to promote research in this area.

The integrated graduate program is designed to prepare graduate students for a future career in the life sciences or science administration.

Under the umbrella of the Dahlem Research School (Biomedical Sciences), doctoral students are qualified in the fields of genetic engineering, tissue engineering and bioinformatics and in addition to their research also trained in 3R methods, laboratory animal science, animal protection law and ethical aspects.

A pool of experts will address questions regarding training and research in the field of 3R.

The Research platform is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
