The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs), established by the UK Government, is an independent scientific organisation, and the largest funder of 3Rs research in the UK. The NC3Rs works in partnership with bioscience research funders, academia, industry, regulators and animal welfare organisations, both in the UK and internationally, to advance the 3Rs.
The NC3Rs awards an annual prize for an original contribution to scientific and technological advances in the 3Rs in medical, biological or veterinary sciences published within the last two years. Sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, the prize consists of a prize grant of £10k, plus a personal award of £1k, and is part of the Centre's commitment to recognise and reward high quality research which has an impact on the use of animals in the life sciences.
The online application process for the prize comprises two stages: a nomination by a proposer and a short statement by the candidate of how the prize grant will be used. Candidates are also able to self-nominate. A prestigious panel has been appointed to assess nominations. Selection of the winner is based on the quality of the published research and its impact on the 3Rs. The 2010 prize is for a piece of primary research published in a peer-reviewed journal in the last two years and is open to any researcher, in academia or industry, based in the United Kingdom. The prize is awarded to the first author(s).
